Visual identity for businesses: why a lasting brand is a structural decision

Published: 5 May 20255 min read

A logo is not an identity. An identity is a system of decisions that holds together across every touchpoint, every format, every scale. Here is how we approach brand work.

Most businesses get their first logo too early and their first identity system too late.

The logo arrives when the company is being named. It is designed quickly, often by whoever is available, in response to the immediate need to exist visually. This is understandable. It is also almost never the right identity for what the company becomes.

Identity is not decoration. It is structure.

A visual identity system is a set of rules that governs how a brand appears — in print, on screen, in motion, at small scale, at large scale. These rules exist so that someone who has never seen the brand before can encounter it in two different contexts and know they are looking at the same thing.

This requires decisions: about typography, about colour, about proportion, about voice. And those decisions need to be internally consistent — not just aesthetically pleasing, but logically connected.

At FJOM Studio, brand work starts with positioning. Who is this for, what does it stand for, how should it feel. Only once those questions have honest answers does the visual work begin.

What we build

Our brand services cover the full range of identity work: brand strategy and positioning, logo and symbol design, typography systems, visual guidelines, editorial design, and art direction. We also work on motion identity — how a brand behaves in time, not just in space.

We do not separate strategy from design. The positioning informs the visual choices. The visual choices reinforce the positioning. They are the same work.

How long it lasts

A well-designed identity system lasts years, sometimes decades. It is designed to be applied by others — by printers, developers, photographers, collaborators — without losing coherence. This durability is not accidental. It comes from the precision of the original decisions.

If your brand has outgrown its current identity — or if you are starting from scratch and want to do it properly — we would like to hear what you are building. See our Graphic & Brand services or get in touch.
